About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

transit question. We are US citizens travelling from Hanoi to Beijing via Changsha.

We have a separate ticket booked from Beijing to New York 2 days later and plan on using the 72 hour free transit to see a bit of Beijing. My question is, since we have a 2 hour layover in Changsha, will we have to go thru customs there? we do not wish to leave the airport. Alternatively, we could book a direct flight from Hanoi to Beijing but the timing is not so good, the flight thru Changsha is better for us. If we do go thru customs in Changsha, could we get the 24 hour free transit there and then just a few hours later go on to Beijing and get the 72 hour free transit there?

Sorry you need a visa for this. Staying in the airport or the plane does not make a difference. If the plane wheels touch the ground in china it counts as a stop and multi stop is limited to 24 hours total.

Also you don't get to cherrypick where you'll be going through customs. All passengers must clear immigration at their first point of entry with no exception.
