L visa to Z visa & ID card question

What is necessary to obtain the plastic Identification cards that Chinese citizens carry around? Is it possible to get obtain one with a 10 year L? Its extremely inconvenient traveling around with a passport and many places simply refuse to accept a passport (some hotels have made a fuss, internet cafes don't accept it, its a hassle at high speed rail stations, etc)

Also, can I switch from a L to a Z in China? Is a Bachelor's Degree absolutely required? From my understanding, the job I will be apply for does not require a Bachelor's and offers visa assistance.

You cannot obtain the plastic Identification cards. If you want to change your L type into a work Z type, you can ask your employer to provide you a work permit. After you get it, you can try to apply for the conversion at the exit and entry administration of the local PSB.

Thank you for your answer! So my understanding is, without a permanent Foreign Residency permit, I can not obtain a plastic ID card whatsoever? I will be expected to carry my passport with me everywhere I go?

If you have permanent Foreign Residency permit, you can get the PRC Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card instead of Chinese ID Card. You need to carry your passport with you everywhere.
