About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I get a free transit with a valid tourist visa?

I'm a Swedish citizen traveling to Beijing from US for 3 days (less than 72 hours) then out to Japan, and coming back to China a week later to stay for a week. I only received a single entry visa. Can I apply for a transit g when I enter for the first time in Beijing so that I can keep the tourist l for my second trip?

You can't apply for a transit visa when you arrive in Beijing, a transit visa must be applied in advance.
But you're eligible for the 144h twov in Beijing (the 72h twov doesn't exist anymore in Beijing).
