About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

i am flying from canada to tokyo and my layover is two days in shanghai.

the only step i'm confused about is the rule about having a ticket with confirmed seat. so yes i have a ticket from shanghai to tokyo but i can only choose my seat 24 hours before the flight so technically i have a confirmed ticket but not a confirmed seat. i'm assuming it just means confirmed ticket to fly out of shnaghai right?

You just need a confirmed booking with a ticket number. You don't need a seat allocation. So you would be fine. No need to worry.
