About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hong Kong - Beijing - Canada

I will fly into Beijing terminal 2 from Hong Kong and then have a 12 hour layover for another flight leaving at terminal 3 back to Canada. I am a Canadian citizen will I need to apply a China Visa for this transit?

Does the 24 hour or 144 free transit apply in this case, because most example are traveling to a 3rd country where as I am transiting back to my own country...

Thanks
