Ivy, you will have to adapt your itinerary slightly. As you can see, you cannot depart from Hong Kong and return to Hong Kong because that would not be a transit, but a round trip and that is not covered under 240 hour visa free transit. In any case, there is a simple solution for this "problem". You will just insert Macau into the equation. So, instead of Hong Kong to Shekou, your friends will take a Hong Kong to Macau ferry and immediately Macau to Shekou. Like this they will have a formal transit: Macau - mainland China - Hong Kong. They are allowed to travel to Hong Kong by high speed train. Here one very important detail. They will have to have (buy) their train tickets from Huiyang or Shenzhen to Hong Kong West Kowloon bought even before they depart from Macau to Shekou. It is highly advisable to have those tickets or better to say booking confirmations that will arrive into their email inbox printed out and have at hand in order to speed up the entire procedure. Also, they will be asked where they will stay and they will provide the address of your home along with your name, address and the phone number. This is a usual procedure. In the end, their stay in mainland China has to be longer than 24 hours in order to be eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and long up to 10 days. I hope they will have a nice visit to China.
