About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

If my itinerary is NYC -> Shanghai -> Korea or Japan -> Shanghai -> NYC is that ok? or can I not return to Shanghai? Thank you!

That trip will be ok. You can use free transit in Shanghai in both ways if you have US passport.
