Cruise starts in Shanghai...but I want to tour Beijing

I am flying from Canada to Shanghai for a cruise but arriving a few days prior to rest and tour the city. Even though it will be less than 6 days before the cruise begins I assume from what I read that I cannot take a 2 day tour to Beijing without a Visa?! Please confirm this for me and where can we get a Visa?

You need a tourist visa for traveling between Beijing and Shanghai. You don't need a visa if you are only staying in Shanghai.
