Joyce, yes, you are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit, but the way how 24 hour visa free transit is calculated in somewhat different way. It is calculated from your scheduled time arrival until your scheduled time departure. If your time between your scheduled arrival and your scheduled departure is shorter than 24 hours, you are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. As you can see, your arrival in China and your departure from China do not have to be within a one calendar day, but within 24 hours regardless if those 24 hours are spread across two calendar days. Also, I encourage you to use correct terminology because it is not 24 hr transit visa, but 24 hour visa free transit, so there is no visa of any kind at all. Also, the first thing that you will do upon your landing in Shanghai will be to approach 24/240 hour visa free transit where you will apply for a temporary entry permit by handing over a filled out form and your flight/cruise tickets. When your permit is granted, you will head to the immigration. Have a nice and smooth transfer and enjoy in your cruise.
