About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transiting throught Guangzhou and Chengdu Airports

I am considering a one-way flight from Manila to Los Angeles with two stop overs at Guangzhou (CAN) and Chengdu (CTU). Each of these stop overs are less than 5 hours duration.

The first flight will be from Manila to Guangzhou. At Guangzhou I will transfer airlines from China Southern Airlines to Hainan Airlines. At Guangzhou airport I will be required to pick up my luggage and check in at the Hainan Airlines counter. Thus, I'm assuming that I will have to pass through customs in order to pick up my luggage and then check in at Hainan Airlines counter.

From Guangzhou I will then fly to Chengdu to catch a connecting flight to Los Angeles. Both flights will be with Hainan Airlines.

Do I still need to obtain a visa?

Any insight would help.

Thank you in advance.

As long as the scheduled time in China is less than 24 hours, you shouldn't have a problem leaving the airport to collect luggage and recheck with Hainan. Just be careful in case flight is delayed if on separate tickets because if you are late to collect luggage and recheck you may have to leave them behind.
