About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

24 h Transit Rule

I will fly from Germany to Shanghai with a one entry Visa, stay there for 6 weeks. Then fly from Shanghai to Hongkong, stay there for 3 days and fly back from Hongkong to Shanghai. After 20 h I will fly back from Shanghai to Germany.
My Question: Am I allowed to leave the airport for 20 h to see some people in Shanghai using the 24 h rule?
Thank you for your answer.

If you want to leave the airport, then it is up to the immigration officer and what "policy" they have in store that day. In some cases, people were let in when they showed their hotel booking confirmations. So you can have a try. Good luck.

Thank you very much for your quick answer.

Can I use the 72h rule instead of the 24h rule, even if I stay 20h only?

Thank you for your answer.

You don’t get the choice of 72 or 24. You will be given the minimum necessary, ie 24 hours in your case. Anyway, 72 doesn’t exist in Shanghai, it’s 144hrs now.
