About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Australia -> Hong Kong -> Shanghai -> Australia

Hi, I am an Australian citizen flying first to Hong Kong for two days, then to Shanghai for a day or two before returning to Australia via Singapore. This is all for business. Do I need a visa for Shanghai or will I qualify for the 72 hour twov?
Thanks.

The exact routing is important as you must enter china from country A and the next stop must be country C. Plus it cannot be the same one you entered from. They only look immediately before and after Shanghai to determine eligibility.

Hong Kong > Shanghai > Singapore is allowed but Hong Kong > Shanghai > Hong Kong > Singapore would not. Also its a 144 hour Transit With Out Visa, which replaced the 72 hour. You can handle business issues on the TWOV.

Thank you for your prompt reply, you are providing a really helpful service!.

So because I'm entering Shanghai from Hong Kong, the fact that I originally started in Australia is irrelevant?
Also, because I'm entering from Hong Kong, I would then be eligible for the 144 hr TWOV as long as I travel onward to any destination other that Hong Kong or China?

You are correct. As you are entering from Hong Kong, you would then be eligible for the 144 hr TWOV as long as you travel onward to any destination other that Hong Kong or China.
