72-hr visa free in Beijing

Is this exemption still valid today? Would it work if you go on American Airlines USA-PEK and then 69 hours later PEK-Seoul with Asiana airlines on a separate ticket?

Thanks! And do all the paper work over there? No need to tdo anything in the USA before leaving otger than letting the airline know?

You need to inform the airlines in advance that you want to use the free transit in Shanghai when you board the plane.
