Entering China via Airport

Hi

I am looking at planning an Itinerary for a trip to china in order to apply for my visa. I am flying from Sydney, Australia and was wondering what options I have with regards to clearing immigration when entering China? Can I fly into any airport (such as Kashgar or Urumqi via a connection in Guangzhou etc) or do I need to fly into a main airport such as Beijing or Shanghai?

Thank you

Thank you for your reply. for the Itinerary I am looking at, I think it would be more convenient to Start at the West side and work along to Beijing, Therefore I need to know if it it possible to fly into one of the airports I have mentioned with regards to clearing immigration.

It is impossible to start your trip from the west side.
