About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I Need a Visa? I'm traveling from USA to Tokyo.

On my way home, I'm flying Tokyo - Beijing - USA. I have met all the other requirements for a 72 hour twov, but not sure if "third country" counts here. I can't find clarity on if you "transit" in China can only be on your way to or if it can be on your way home.

Do I need to travel to Beijing before Tokyo or is the 72 hours fine with me flying home so long as country 1 and country 3 aren't the same?

Tokyo > Beijing > USA is allowed under the 144 hour twov (72 hour doesn't exist anymore). It doesn't matter where you are before or after that. What matters is what is immediately before and after is not the same country.

Thank you! Have you heard of travelers getting stuck because of the airlines? I'm thinking that I may have trouble on my flight Tokyo-Beijing. I've read about airline employees not really knowing these rules (because Japanese visitors to China typically don't need visas) and obviously I won't be able to communicate this rule in anything but English! I'll have a print out, in English, but besides that am interested if you have any suggestions or information on how to avoid this potential situation. Thanks!

In the unlikely event of a problem at check-in, just make sure the agent is putting USA as your destination and China as your transit into Timatic. If they put China as your destination then obviously the transit without visa rules won't show up.
