About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can the third country (Country C) be a stopover back to Country A?

So, my friend will be in Shanghai for a weekend and wants me to meet her there.
I live in Japan but am a US citizen, so I was looking at a Japan-Shanghai flight to get there, then looking at Japan-Korea-Shanghai for a return. Will the 72-hour free transit still apply even if the last country is not my final destination?

If you fly Japan - Shanghai - Korea - Japan then you're fine for the 144h twov.
There's no 72h twov in Shanghai.
