About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Bangkok-Shanghai-LA

For the flights 've seen, there's a layover in Shanghai. Would I be able to add a few days instead of just a layover before flying back to LA without obtaining an actual visa?

You can do that. However, keep in mind that you should do so BEFORE your arrival to Shanghai and not after, as immigration may not let you in the country or only give you a 24-hour duration of stay.
