Can we return to same country rather than flying to another country

I am a U.S. citizen living in Japan. I want to go to Shanghai for one day meeting. I will travel from Tokyo to Shanghai. If I am returning to Tokyo can this 144 hours via free stay be applicable? Thanks

You need a visa or a different itinerary. Transit without visa obviously does not apply if you’re not in transit.
