144h visa free entrance applicable?

We (German and Spanish passport) want to fly from Vladivostok(Russia) to Peking and after 4 days from Peking to Germany with different airlines. Is the 144h free transit applicable? Do we have to inform the airline when boarding? A daytrip to the Great Wall would be possible?
