Can I get the 144 hour visa if flying to Beijing with a connection in Chengdu?

We are flying from New Zealand to Beijing and then on to Russia. We have a 3 night stop in Beijing. Our flight to Beijing has a connection in Chengdu. Do we pass through customs there? If so can we still get the 144 hour visa for Beijing area?
