About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Layover in Beijing. Do they need a visa?

My step daughter and a friend have a lay over in Beijing for 11 hours on their way to Thialand, they are going to head to the great wall during the lay over.

If they have a USA or canadian passport they can get a transit visa on arrival for free. Just keep in mind that they cannot leave the Beijing Capital Region. The Great Wall cover multiple Chinese regions so make sure that they only visit the section of the Wall within Beijing such as Badaling or Mutianyu.
