About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

UK travel document - China/Shanghai Layover

Hello,

I am flying from London - Shanghai - Tokyo and Tokyo - Shanghai - London but as I don’t hold the British passport I am instead travelling using UK travel document (refugee) and have obtained Tourist Visa for the intended trip to Japan. Am I eligible to use the 24 hours period of visa-free that is offered or do I need to apply for a G-Visa ?

Thank you for your time

Mehdi, you are allowed to travel to Japan with a refugee document by relying on 24 hour visa free transit scheme. It is important that your layovers in Shanghai are not longer than 24 hours each way. Also, I hope you are traveling on the same ticket and your luggage will be tagged all the way to Japan and to UK on your return flight. If this is the case, you will just walk from one to the other gate and you do not need to perform any formality nor to fill out any form. Also, you will not be a subject of immigration and customs inspections. You will just encounter a security check between the two gates. You should not attempt to apply for a temporary entry permit (to exit the airport) while in Shanghai regardless of the length of your layover because you will be rejected in such an attempt. You should just wait for your next flight in the transit area of Shanghai airport. Have a nice journey.
