About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

How do layovers count?

I am considering this route: Dubai -> Hong Kong (3 hour layover, not entering HK) -> Beijing (stay a few days) -> Hong Kong (stay a few days)

Does this work because even though I’m entering on a flight from HK, I didn’t enter HK and was just transiting on the way from Dubai? Or does it not work because the flights are still HK -> Beijing -> HK?

John, the basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit clearly says, the immediate points (regardless of their nature) before and after mainland China have to be in two separate countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see, your itinerary is not eligible because your both immediate points are located in Hong Kong and that is considered to be a round trip. You are advised to retain the first leg until Beijing, but from Beijing take a direct flight to Macau (located next to Hong Kong). When you arrive in Macau, you will just transfer to Hong Kong. Like this, you will make your itinerary an eligible one. Hope this helps.
