About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I qualify for the 144 hour rule?

My flight itinerary is as follows:
Seattle-Beijing
(the first layover between Beijing and Bangkok is only three hours and we don't plan on leaving the airport-what would we do in this case?)
Beijing-Bangkok
Bangkok-Phuket
Phuket-Beijing
(this layover, we are going to spend two full days in Beijing before departing back to the US)
Beijing-Seattle

So, do we apply for the 144 hour rule? Would we need to apply at the first and second layover or just the second layover when we leave the airport?

For your first layover, you do not need to go through immigration if your inbound and outbound flights are in the same terminal. Just follow the "Transit" sign after you deplane and you will only go through security. For the second layover (or if your first layover's flights are not in the same terminal), you need to proceed to immigration, find the dedicated visa-free transit counter and complete a form (plus the arrival/departure card), then you'll wait in line and an officer will review your documents. Have hotel booking and/or onward flight confirmation handy.
