17 hr layover in Shanghai

I’ve been reading a lot of sites and they’re all very confusing. On my way back to the U.S, I have a layover in Shanghai. It’s only 17 hours but we would like to leave the airport. Will we need a visa?

Ashley, since this Feb, leaving the airport is no longer possible if your layover is less than 24 hours regardless of nationality. In some cases, however, people were let in when they showed their hotel booking confirmations.

Thank you for the information! So I will either have to book a hotel or apply for a visa right?
