USA - Tokyo - Shanghai - Tokyo

Im an US citizen. Do i need to obtain a visa if flying into SH from Tokyo and then returning to Tokyo? Or will I be eligible for the 72hr or 144hr visa free transit?

Hello, a visa is needed for the round trip. To apply the 72-144h visa-free transit, the departing place and destination should be different international areas, and the round trip doesn't qualify for this.
