Flight from France - Tokyo

Hi I have a Canadian Passport and my boyfriend has a French Passport and we're flying from Paris to Tokyo. The flight is as follows : Paris > Shanghai (2hr layover) > Tokyo, then Tokyo > Shanghai (5hr layover) > Paris. Do we need a visa for the 2 layovers?

Thanks,
Angela
