UK Citizen, flying to Guangzhou to stay for 48 hours before taking the train to Hong Kong

I will be flying to Guangzhou, staying for approximately 48 hours and then leaving by train to Hong Kong. I will not be returning to China on this trip. Which is the best Visa? Am I correct in thinking the free 72 hours does not apply?
