About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

me and my family are traveling to Tokyo,

can we get a transit visa going to Beijing for 3 days then from there flying to hong kong?

Yes, on US Passport as long as your single stop in Beijing China is 144 hours or less then no Visa required as HK counts as a third country.
