About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruise from Singapore to Shanghai (HK in the middle)

I have a US passport and will do the following cruise from Singapore-Thailand-Vietnam-Hong Kong-South Korea-Japan-Shanghai. I'll stay one night in Shanghai before returning to the US. Do I need a visa? Or can I use the 144-hour free-transit?
