About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I will be travelling to Shanghai from South Korea on a US passport.

I'm traveling to Shanghai from Seoul and I have a US passport. I will only be staying 4 days and then go back to South Korea. Can I use the 144hr free transit or do I need a regular visitors visa since there is no third country involved?

There's no third country, it's not a transit, and obviously doesn't qualify for visa-free transit. You need a visa.
