About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa free for cruise departing Shanghai

Hi, I have an Australian passport and am flying to Shanghai to board back to back cruises. I arrive in shanghai at 8pm and need to stay in a hotel overnight, as first cruise departs the next day around 4pm. The cruise is return to Shanghai with ports including a couple of Chinese cities and Japan. On arrival back in Shanghai, I am doing another cruise straight away - again, to Japanese and perhaps one Chinese port. I fly back to Australia from Shanghai at the end of the cruise (1 night in hotel on initial arrival into Shanghai, 2 cruises - one 5 night plus one 4 night and departing for Australia on the night of cruise returning to Shanghai). Am I eligible for the 72hr or 144hr free transit or do I require a formal multi entry tourist L type from the Chinese consulate before I leave Australia?

Sue, based on what you said, I’m afraid you need to apply for a multiple-entry tourist L type for that.
