About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I use the 72 hour transit visa if entering on a flight from the US and returning to the US?

I have the opportunity to be in Beijing for 48 to 72 hours. I would be arriving from Detroit and departing to Seattle! I will be in Seattle on business and have the opportunity to take advantage of the low fares and travel to Beijing for a long weekend if I can use the 72 hours free transit!

Of course you can't if you're not in transit.
