About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US Passport Holder to Shanghai

Hi there,

If i travel from USA to Shanghai then onto Tokyo (and back to USA), do i need an entry permit?
Technically you do not need an entry permit in Tokyo (with USA passport) so does the 144 hour rule apply "onward ticket with confirmed seat + Visa)

Thanks!

Hi, you can use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai by traveling like that. It will be okay if you don't have visa for Tokyo. No need to worry.
