hi i am australian and booked hotel and flight to hk for xmas can i visit china to look for a day is there a day permit or visa i can purchase from hk

You can apply for a 5-day Shenzhen VOA at a land border between Shenzhen and HK for a fee. Details are on the "visa on arrival" page.
