Tokyo-HK-Shanghai-Tokyo?

Dear all: sorry, but I’m a little lost. I’ve been to the Chinese embassy and they couldn’t confirm me if I’ll be able to get the 144h exemption if I want to do the following route: Tokyo-HK-SH-Tokyo.
Could you please help me?

For the route of HK - Shanghai - Tokyo, you are qualified for the 144h visa exemptation. But if you will only stopover in HK and head for SH, you cannot apply it.
