144h free transit exemption requirements

Hello, my itinerary is the following:

India to HK (7 November)
HK to Shanghai (11 November)
Shanghai to UK (15 November)

All legs of the trip are with different airlines. Can I still use the 144h exemption and if so, do I need to tell the airlines taking me to and from Shanghai?

Also, if I am staying with friends in Shanghai, do I have to register with the police?

Many thanks

Anna, you can still use the 144h exemption in Shanghai, and you need to inform the airlines in advance that you want to use the free transit when you board the flight in HK. You need to register with the police after your entry to Shanghai.
