About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Inquiry: 72-hours transit visa for Australian passport holders

I will be travelling to Hong Kong and Beijing next week (Australian passport holder). My itinerary will look as follows:
MEL to HKG 08 Nov, Wed
HKG to PEK 09 Nov, Thu
PEK to HKG 10 Nov, Fri
HKG to MEL 11 Nov, Sat
Given that I will only stay in Beijing for 2 days, can he travel on the 72-hours free entry into Mainland China?

No. HKG-PEK-HKG is not a transit in Beijing, so obviously you cannot use the 72 hours free transit. You need a visa or you need to change your flights.
