Ernest, as you will travel by train when leaving Guangzhou, the 72 hour free transit is not applicable. If your layover in Guangzhou exceeds 24 hours, you need to apply for a transit G type.

Thank you, Miguel, for the answer. I have two more question than:

1) If the layover does not exceed 24 hours am I free to apply for a 24-hours direct transit at the airport and than as said, go to HongKong or Macao by train?

2) Can I apply for a G type transit at the airport?

You'll definitely require a visa regardless of your layover time if traveling to HK by train, because GZ no longer allows people traveling this way to enter China without a visa.
