About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Tokyo to Beijing to tokyo

Hi there, I'm visiting Tokyo in December and would like to fly to Beijing (from Tokyo) on a Monday afternoon and leave on Wednesday morning( less than 72 hours) back to Tokyo. Would this apply to me (as a US citizen), or not because it's not really a transit, just a short trip from Tokyo?

That's not gonna happen. You'll either be refused boarding or be deported when reached Chinese soil.
