About:China Transit Visa

London to Tokyo via Beijing

Hello,

Me (British) and my girlfriend (Norwegian) are going to Japan in a few weeks and I was unsure as to whether we needed a visa or not. The stopover in Beijing is just over 16 hours.

As far as I understand the information above, we would be able to stay for 24 hours direct transit. Is this correct? What I am not clear on is how far we are allowed to go. We intend to stay over in Beijing at a hotel, and maybe go around and see the city quickly.

It is correct. You do qualify for the 24 hour direct transit in Beijing. You are allowed to travel within Beijing city, but you need to apply for a free temporary stay permit at Beijing airport if you want to leave the airport.

Hi,

Thanks for that. Is it just a matter of going through immigration, getting the permit stamped onto our passports and off we go? Does anyone know about the luggage situation for such a long stopover; are they checked through automatically or would we have to collect them and go through the whole process again upon leaving Beijing the next day?

You can contact with the airlines to confirm if you need to collect your luggage. If your luggage is delivered to the final destination directly, there is no need to collect it.
