Extending X1 Visa Outside of China

I study in Shanghai and I have two years left. My residence permit expires July 31 but I'm home for the summer in the US. I will be returning to China in early September so is it possible to extend my X1 type from the US so that I may return? Or do I have to get a tourist L type and apply for a student X type again in SH?

No, it cannot be extended outside China.
If you can get the relevant documents, you are advised to extend your residence permit before you leave China. You should apply for the extension 30 days prior to its expiry date. If it can be extended, you can use the residence permit to exit and enter China casually. No need to apply for a tourist L type or a new X type then.
