Nanning to Hanoi Train Tickets

I do not want to buy the Nanning-Hanoi tickets in advance online since it cannot be cancelled if something happens. Can I buy them at the Guilin station when I will be there in October?

When buying the tickets at e.g. Guilin station, do you also need to show a Vietnamese passport, as is the case for online booking? Thanks in advance for your reply!
