About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 Hour Question

Coming from Japan to Shanghai and then leaving to NYC but on one-way tickets, is that an issue if I want to take advantage of the 72 hour Visa? One way from Tokyo to Shanghai and then one way Shanghai to NYC.
