About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Flying from Canada to Shanghai & then flying Shanghai-Bangkok with transit in Ghangzhou

Hello, I am flying in to Shanghai Pudong on Air Canada on Sept. 1 in the afternoon and will need to clear passport control to retrieve my luggage and register in the evening for flights Shanghai Pudong - Bangkok with connection/transit on the same day through Ghangzhou. Am I eligible for the 72-hour transit visa as a Canadian citizen if I connect through Ghangzhou or do I need to take a direct flight Shanghai-Bangkok?

No, because of your connection in Guangzhou. To utilize the visa-free transit, only one stop in China is allowed. But you are eligible for the 24-hour transit if your total time spent in China is under 24 hours.
