During your layover in KM, you may go through a series of immigration procedures including the security check, customs and so on.
The 1.5 hours stop in Nanjing, you may follow the arrangement of the staff. If the time is enough, they may give the boarding pass to you and you can get off the plane for a short rest. If the time is too tight, then you may not need to go off the plane and just need to wait the passengers in Nanjing to get on the plane, and then continue the flight.

Hi Nisha, I have the same flight from Nepal back to Canada with a layover in Kunming and a short stop (but same flight number) in Nanjing. I don't have a Chinese Visa but I am now worried that I must have one for both my flight to Nepal and home again. Will I need a visa for this type or trip? Or will I be allowed the 72 hour visa free transit? Thank you in advance, Rachel

Don’t worry. You don’t need a visa for this trip. Your layover is only 12 hours, and you can enjoy the 24 hour free policy. If you want to go out the airport during your layover in KM, you may need to apply for a stay permit.
