Neither 24 hour direct transit nor 72 hour free transit is available in Shenzhen, so if you travel through Shenzhen, a visa is necessary.
You cannot use the 72 hour free transit in Guangzhou either if you go there by train, but if your total layover time in Guangzhou is within 24 hours, you can use the 24 hour direct transit. No visa will be needed then.
