About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

If I travel from Canada to Beijing stay in Beijing for 72 hours

and then fly into Shanghai and stay in Shanghai from 96 hours what kind of a visa will I need to apply for?

Can i use the 72 hour in beijing and the the 144 hour in shanghai and then proceed to my destination of japan?

No, unless you put a side-trip to (for example) Hong Kong. Canada-PEK-HKG-SHA-Japan would work. Otherwise you need a visa in advance.
