Layover under 24 hours, sight seeing while in China

Hello, I am going to have a layover in Shanghai for 19 hours and then flying out to South Korea as my connecting flight. I am planning to go sight-seeing and staying in a hotel. Will I need to apply for the Temporary Stay Permit? Is this at the airport? Thanks!

Yes, you need to apply for a free temporary stay permit at the immigration office when you arrive at Shanghai airport.
