About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I have a flight from Tokyo to Beijing for a long layover (land April 20th at 6:30pm

and depart to Sydney April 22nd at 4:30pm so almost a 48 hours layover). Can I use the 72 hour free transit? I'm an American citizen and have two one way tickets with a visa to Sydney already.
